Our newest local degree program offering at LMC, students can now receive a local AA degree in Ethnic Studies! Ethnic Studies is a transdisciplinary academic field that centralizes the experiences and perspectives of people of color within and beyond the United States. It emerged in academia as a response to charges that traditional social science and humanities disciplines within academia prioritize Eurocentric perspectives and marginalizes the knowledge created by scholars of color. Ethnic Studies specifically analyzes the ways that race and racism have been and continue to be powerful social, cultural, and political forces and looks at the intersections to 天博 axes of stratification, such as gender, class, sexuality, legal status, ableness, etc. Ethnic Studies continues to demand more from academic institutions and interrelated fields of study as it studies representation, racialization, racial formation theory as it demands self-determination, agency, and anti-racist practices in academics and all areas of life.
Earning a local degree in Ethnic Studies can prepare students for 天博s that work with diverse communities of color or under-served communities. These areas can include education and research, community and social services, public policy and government, human and health services, communications, museums, and cultural centers. Many have also used the skills they learned to pursue work in the nonprofit sector.
